Emotional Intelligence: Understand and relate to your employees

In one of our previous blog posts, we revealed five of the best management techniques you should be using. One of the techniques mentioned was emotional intelligence, which we are going to discuss in further detail below.

Emotional intelligence is a critical characteristic for any manager in any industry. By understanding your employees and relating to them, you will be able to build a relationship that is centred on trust and mutual respect, and this will lead to a higher quality and more productive workforce.

How to lead with emotional intelligence

  1. Embrace differences – Your team isn’t going to be made up of clones with the same views and opinions, and nor should you want it to be. As a leader, you need to be more sensitive regarding leveraging and managing differences in people. Great teams are made up of people with unique abilities and talents. Be smart and find common ground when people have distinct differences.
  2. Care about people – Caring in itself is very easy, but showing that you care is a different thing entirely. You need to learn to express that you care and do it while being genuine in your delivery. Leaders need to be compassionate to create the right balance in the workplace.
  3. Be mindful of your employees’ needs – If your employees aren’t working to the level they could be, be mindful about how you broach the subject. Everyone has the ability to boost his or her productivity and performance. Giving them a stern talking to won’t always work. Instead, give them the tools to do better through suggestions and feedback.
  4. Be accountable – You need to be an equal with your employees. Just because you are in charge does not mean that you should not be held accountable. The best leaders are those that are less mysterious and more available. If you are transparent and admit when you are wrong, you create a sense of trust and it makes you appear more genuine and real.
  5. Don’t only think about the bottom line

Last but not least, when motivating employees, you should not merely think about the bottom line. Motivate them by considering how the job will benefit them – the human side of success. People want to feel like they are benefiting themselves and creating an impact, and so it is important to consider this in your approach.
